Overview
Eight miles northeast of Duun-Kharag, Rimehold clings to the lower spurs of the Griff Mountains where the land rises abruptly toward the snow-capped peaks that form the northern border of Tenh. Here the mountains are no gentle hills but towering walls of fractured grey stone, their upper reaches disappearing into cloud and mist. Even during midsummer, frost lingers upon shaded cliffs and mine entrances.
The settlement owes its existence to the rich mineral veins threading the mountainsides. Platinum is its greatest prize, though iron, silver, granite, and occasional gemstones emerge from the delves as well. Generations of dwarven miners, Flan settlers, and industrious gnomes have transformed what would otherwise be an inhospitable wilderness into one of the northern Grimwold Marches’ most valuable frontier communities.
The Griff Mountains create a unique microclimate around Rimehold. Cold air pours continuously from the higher elevations, settling over the town like an invisible river. Summers rarely feel warmer than spring, autumn arrives early, and winter holds the settlement beneath snow and ice for long months. The frost that coats rooftops, tools, and stone through much of the year gave the town its name.
Life here is dictated by necessity rather than comfort. The northern quarter is dominated by mines, smelters, and forgeworks, while the town itself occupies a narrow shelf of stone overlooking the southern road toward Dryvale. Sparse fields of rye, barley, hardy vegetables, and pastureland support goats and sheep where the rocky soil permits.
The surrounding woodland is carefully managed rather than exploited. Timber, charcoal, flax, wax, and honey are harvested responsibly under a tradition shared between the Flan and dwarves that teaches respect for both mountain and forest. The balance has served the settlement well for generations.
Although friendly enough to honest travelers, the folk of Rimehold are reserved. They work hard, speak plainly, and concern themselves more with surviving another winter than the affairs of strangers.
North of town, the managed woodland gradually gives way to untended forest where the mountain presses against the trees. Somewhere beyond those woods lies the abandoned workings of Gnottbrunr.
No one willingly goes there. No one willingly speaks of it. Even the dwarves—who love stone more than nearly anything else—keep a respectful distance from the place they refuse to name.
Places to Go
The Wetted Whistle (Inn & Tavern)
The Wetted Whistle serves as Rimehold’s only true inn and the social heart of the settlement. Located on the west side of the Frostvein Charter Hall, near the center of town, much of the common room lies below ground in the dwarven fashion. Thick stone walls wrapped in layers of peat and turf keep the inn comfortably warm during winter and pleasantly cool through the short northern summers.
A massive hearth dominates the common room, while a broad stone chimney rises from the hill above like the stack of a small smelter. During the warmer months the great masonry oven bakes bread for much of the settlement.
The air is rich with the smell of fresh bread, peat smoke, hearty stew, and dark ale. Miners, guards, merchants, and caravan masters gather here after day’s end, though conversations rarely rise above a steady murmur.
Visitors quickly learn that the people of Rimehold are courteous enough—but some subjects cause entire tables to fall silent.
Frostvein Charter Hall
Standing beside the Wetted Whistle, Frostvein Charter Hall serves as headquarters of the Rimehold Mining Charter and the administrative heart of the town. Mine claims are registered here, ore is assayed, contracts are negotiated, and disputes between prospectors, miners, and craftsmen are settled beneath its heavy granite roof.
The hall also serves as Rimehold’s council chamber, where Thane Borika Frostmantle meets with Captain Halvmar, senior craftsmen, and caravan factors whenever matters of security or commerce require discussion.
Truestrike Forgeworks
The industrial heart of Rimehold lies close beneath the delves, where a collective of dwarf-led smelters, smiths, and forge-men labor beneath soot-darkened roofs. Nearly every piece of metalwork required to keep the mines functioning is produced here: picks, wedges, chains, spikes, pitons, braces, hinges, ore buckets, cart fittings, and iron wheel rims.
Weapons and armor receive dependable repairs built to withstand mountain cold, furnace heat, and hard use. Ornamentation is almost nonexistent—strength and reliability are the only qualities that matter.
When the furnaces quiet, many of the forge workers return to the mines or quarry, making Truestrike as much a brotherhood of miners as craftsmen.
Wooden tools, leather goods, rope, nets, and wagon timbers are instead supplied by neighboring craftsmen throughout town.
The Rimehold Delves
The northern cliffs are riddled with active mine entrances where generations have pursued veins of platinum, iron, silver, and precious stone deep beneath the Griff Mountains. Ore carts constantly move between the shafts and nearby smelters, while older tunnels remain sealed behind heavy stone doors carved with ancient dwarven runes.
Only chartered miners and authorized visitors are permitted beyond the guarded entrances.
Mountainsfoot Market
Sheltered from the mountain winds by surrounding buildings and natural stone outcroppings, Mountainsfoot Market serves as Rimehold’s commercial center. Ore buyers haggle with mine factors while farmers, traders, craftsmen, and caravan merchants exchange supplies difficult to obtain so far north.
Permanent stalls include tool merchants, chandlers, provisioners, and several respected gnomish gem-cutters whose polished stones are sought throughout the Marches.
The square also contains the town’s public scales, hiring board, and notice posts where caravans recruit guards and miners seek new contracts.
The Talloworks
Near the market, though carefully downwind of the residences and inn, stands the Talloworks. Operated by Roj Tallo and his family, the workshop produces candles, lamp oil, grease, waterproofing compounds, and other necessities of mine life.
Fat from butchered livestock is rendered alongside plant, fish, and traded oils, while locally gathered beeswax produces cleaner-burning candles prized by both households and the Mining Charter.
The Tallos maintain close ties with nearby apiaries and the druids of the Cern Vaatha mission, whose knowledge of flowering seasons and woodland health ensures the bees continue to thrive despite the demands of the frontier.
Watch-Crown Garrison
Built upon a rocky rise overlooking the western and northern approaches, the Watch-Crown serves as Rimehold’s military headquarters. The stone tower is surrounded by a fortified yard containing barracks, an armory, storage buildings, and stables for the mounted patrols.
Twenty to twenty-five soldiers defend the settlement alongside a dozen cavalry riders who regularly patrol the mountain roads and western valleys where hobgoblins, gnolls, and other raiders occasionally descend from the high country.
Signal braziers and great warning horns stand ready should danger threaten the frontier.
The soldiers watch the mountains far more closely than they watch the town.
Southern Fields
South of Rimehold lie several miles of difficult farmland where hardy rye, barley, turnips, and root vegetables struggle against rocky soil and early frosts. Goats and sheep graze the surrounding hillsides, providing meat, wool, milk, and hides for the settlement.
Every harvest is hard-earned, and every winter reminds the people how narrow the margin between prosperity and hardship truly is.
Tharn Icevein’s Mineral Laboratory
Half workshop and half laboratory, this smoke-stained stone building sits near the forge district where unusual odors and the occasional muffled explosion have become accepted parts of daily life.
Here Tharn Icevein studies mineral salts, metallurgical fluxes, alchemical compounds, and curious reactions found only within the Griff Mountains. His experiments have improved smelting techniques, produced unusual reagents, and occasionally startled half the neighborhood.
The Tinker
Ask three townsfolk where the Tinker lives and you are likely to receive four different answers.
Some insist an eccentric gnome maintains a hidden workshop somewhere near the edge of town. Others claim the Tinker appears only when unusual machinery requires repair before vanishing again without explanation. Still others insist there is no Tinker at all—only exceptionally talented craftsmen unwilling to take credit for impossible work.
Whatever the truth, ingenious mechanisms occasionally appear throughout Rimehold, and no one seems especially surprised.
People to See
Captain Rurik Halvmar
Commander of the Watch-Crown
A seasoned frontier officer, Captain Halvmar commands Rimehold’s garrison with quiet discipline. Practical, observant, and uninterested in politics, he concerns himself chiefly with keeping the northern roads secure and monitoring the increasing boldness of humanoid raiders in the mountain valleys.
Competence earns his respect more quickly than titles.
Thane Borika Frostmantle
Master of the Delves
Borika oversees the mining charter, supervises new excavations, and settles disputes among the charter holders. Patient, deliberate, and highly respected, he has become increasingly reluctant to authorize work near several abandoned shafts whose origins predate even the oldest surviving mining records.
Tharn Icevein
Mineral Alchemist
Brilliant, eccentric, and endlessly curious, Tharn approaches chemistry with the same determination most dwarves reserve for stonework. He delights in explaining crystalline structures, unusual ores, and obscure reactions, often while one of his latest experiments bubbles—or occasionally explodes—nearby.
Few people understand the mountains beneath Rimehold better than he does.
Nella Quickwhistle
Gem Cutter & Appraiser
One of the finest lapidaries in the northern Marches, Nella possesses an uncanny eye for gemstones and unusual mineral specimens. Friendly and inquisitive, she quietly collects stories alongside stones and is often the first to recognize when something recovered from the mountains is… different.
Roj Tallo
Chandler & Oil Refiner
Roj oversees the Talloworks with the help of his extended family. Broad-shouldered and perpetually marked with soot or wax, he knows the surrounding forests, apiaries, and grazing lands as well as any ranger.
He is among the more approachable folk in Rimehold, though even he grows noticeably reserved whenever conversation turns toward the northern woods.
Ygra Stone-Ear
Tunnel Listener
Old even by dwarven standards, Ygra spends long hours beneath the mountain simply listening.
Miners swear she can hear shifting rock before a collapse, locate hidden watercourses through solid stone, and recognize forgotten tunnels by their echoes alone. Whether these talents are skill, intuition, or something older, no one can say.
Ygra refuses to explain. She also refuses to travel north of the old forest—and advises others to do the same.
